Double-Wall Fuel Storage and Why Secondary Containment Matters
“Double-wall” is one of those specifications that is easy to skim past — until a single-wall tank fails and you are dealing with a spill, a cleanup bill, and a regulator. Here is what the term means and why it is worth insisting on.
What double-wall means
A double-wall tank is exactly what it sounds like: a primary tank that holds the fuel, surrounded by a second outer wall. The space between them provides secondary containment. If the primary tank develops a leak, the fuel is captured in the interstitial space between the walls rather than escaping to the ground.
The risk it mitigates
Fuel released to soil or water is expensive and slow to remediate, can trigger regulatory action, and creates real environmental and reputational damage. Secondary containment is a physical safeguard against exactly that scenario. It buys time to detect and respond to a problem before it becomes a release.
Why it is the expectation now
On most industrial and commercial sites, secondary containment is either required or strongly expected by authorities and insurers. Rather than adding a separate containment structure around a single-wall tank, a double-wall design builds the containment into the tank itself — which is simpler to site, deploy, and inspect. That is why every Hudson station is double-wall as standard, not as an upgrade.
What to look for
Beyond the double wall itself, ask about the construction and testing standards referenced (such as UL 142 and CAN/ULC-S601), monitoring for the interstitial space, and how the system handles overfill and dispensing safety.
